History of Scottsdale

Scottsdale is named after a US Army chaplain Winfield Scott who in 1888 visited Salt River and purchased an area for farming there. The excellent climate and the scenic beauty served as an impetus for new settlers. While agriculture was the main occupation, health seekers and those interested in cultural heritage of the city also came to Scottsdale. Early settlers set up a school system in the 1890s and public education training led to the emergence of artists and writers from this part of the US. Scottsdale also developed along with other resorts in this area such as Ingleside Inn. This is an irrigated desert location whereby it is close to the new Arizona canal tapping the Salt River System. This was the reason why the entire valley flourished and construction of several dams such as Granite Reef and Roosevelt brought about a transformation of the city and a consequent population boom. Scottsdale grew rapidly from then as a small market town and ranching operations here earned this city the nickname West’s Most Western Town. Cattle ranches and cattle drives continued to develop through the 1950s in this city.

During the start of the Great Depression in the 1930s, many artists and architects came to Scottsdale such as famous architect Andrew Llyod Wright. During the WW2, the opening of the Thunderbird II airfield in the 1940s heralded a new era for Scottsdale. During 1947, the Scottsdale Chamber of Commerce was firmed and served as a draw for visitors. It was in the 1950s that renowned company Motorola opened a plant towards the western border near this city and within the city on McDowell Road. The official motto of this town is also The West’s Most Western Town. Town grew considerably during the 1950s and an area of 5 square miles formed its boundaries in 1960s.  Towards the close of this decade, the population of Scottsdale had increased  6 fold while land area has risen 12 fold. The city then expanded towards the north into the high Sonoran Desert. City is home to more than 250,000 people currently.  This city is also a popular influx for tourists and new resorts have opened in Scottsdale too. New resorts are appearing across the city and many ranches are on the anvil  with some famous ones being McDowell Mountain Ranch and Scottsdale Ranch.
